Bounce Back One Day Workshop, 18 June, Glasgow 9.30-4.30

City of Glasgow College, 60 North Hanover St, 9.30 - 4.30

The Centre’s contact with schools on pupils' confidence and well-being has forcefully brought home the fact that overprotection of young people is undermining their resilience. We passionately believe if teachers and others working with young people understand resilience and how it is formed they will make a substantial contribution to young people’s well-being. This is also true for those working in colleges and universities as these issues are also apparent there.

The Centre has always been very keen to promote an outstanding Australian resiliency programme called Bounce Back. Over the past ten years we have run three courses with Dr Toni Noble, one of the Bounce Back creators. These courses have been exceptionally well-received as the material is great and Toni is a wonderful facilitator. So we are delighted that she has agreed to deliver another one day training course for us.

What is the workshop about?

This workshop offers practical strategies to classroom teachers and others on how to help all children and young people cope with the complexity of their everyday lives and learn to ‘bounce back’ when they experience sadness, difficulties, frustrations, failures and hard times. Resilience skills are particularly important to young people these days as increasing numbers of young people struggle through school and life with social and emotional needs that greatly challenge schools and social services.

Course outcomes

This practical one day workshop offers an introduction to:

• Whole school and whole class strategies on building pro-social, value-based school cultures.
• Ways to integrate the teaching of resilient skills into the Primary 1 to Second Year curriculum.
• Classroom topics on pupil well-being and resilience that also meet curriculum outcomes.
• Ideas on how to adopt a literature-based approach to teaching resilience
• Engaging classroom activities based on Cooperative Learning techniques.

The workshop will have a school focus but all Toni's workshops in Scotland have attracted people from the college or youth work sector and these participants have still gained a lot from the training.
