The (other) Secret

The Secret, a 'positive thinking' book and DVD, distorts science and may be undermining for various groups of people

The Secret, a ?positive thinking? book and DVD by Rhonda Byrne, has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide.   This influential self-help movement espouses a law of attraction ?like attracts like? approach for people who want to feel good and make money.  According to the Michael Shermer, writing in the May edition of Scientific America, this movement not only lacks scientific evidence, but also distorts science to fit with what they are espousing.  Not only this, but actually the whole concept in undermining for a large number of people.  For example, this law of attraction  suggests that ?the only reason any person does not have enough money is because they are blocking money from coming to them with their thoughts? as Schermer points out ?damn those poor Kenyans.  If only they weren?t such pessimistic sourpusses? This movement has become influential through the backing of Oprah Winfrey.  Shermer takes a quote from Oprah?s site - ?the energy you put into the world?both good and bad?is exactly what comes back to you.  This means you create the circumstances of your life with choices you make every day?? - to highlight that this just does not fit with reality.  If we follow this theory then survivors of the Auschwitz, massacred Native Americans and enslaved African Americans created their circumstances ? just not true.
