There is growing recognition surrounding the need for alternatives to drugs for treating depression. Previous studies have revealed that mindfulness meditation is effective in helping people to accept, and deal with, their negativity.
Recent results from a randomized controlled trial, published in this month Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, has found that Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is as effective as antidepressants for treating long term depression. The relapse rates among participants in the MBCT group were lower and quality of life was higher compared to those taking drugs.
